Differentiation and Integration of the Psychological Functions

The following diagrams represent the process of differentiation and integration of the psychological functions. The terms "dominant, auxilliary, and inferior" refer to the hierarchy of sensing, intuition, thinking, and feeling as defined by Jung and discussed in class. Extraversion and introversion are not shown in this process.
The process occurs as life-span development and is concomitant with individuation. It is important to understand that this process does not automatically occur with age... indeed, very few ever reach the level of having finely integrated psychological functions and many people never get beyond the earliest stages of differentiation. At best, the process of differentiation usually takes the first half of a typical life span and integration occurs in the second half. The age ranges given for each are approximate for each level in the process.
