Instructional Technology Assignment: (15 pts)

4800S

Randy L. Hoover, Instructor

You are to design an operational (online) WWW site for a Social Studies education that will be of value to both students taking Social Studies and to teachers teaching Social Studies. The site must be designed with both in mind. The emphasis of your site should be consistent with the notions of empowering teaching and learning that are used in this class. Your site should not be overly complex, but must be something that will facilitate the empowerment of your audience and promote the idea of Social Studies literacy in effective ways.

Specifically:

1.      We will discuss this assignment in detail in class and my graduate assistant will help you in the computer lab if needed.

2.        You may work alone or with up to two other members of the class. The maximum group size is three people.

3.        Design the site such that there are links to Social Studies education resources.

4.        You may use any HTML editor you choose and save in either Mac or PC format.

5.        Make certain you use accepted WWW HTML format.

6.        Give a brief overview of the nature and value of the site on the home page.

7.        Make certain that all the links are in proper HTML style and are all working.

8.        Make certain that you follow these guidelines for Section 508 accessibility compliance.

9.        Upload the file to either the YSU server or a server of your choice.

10.    You can use this tool to check if your pages are Section 508 compliant. My graduate assistant will go over how to use it in class.

11. Give my graduate assistant a 3 X 5 file card with:

A.     The Title of the site.

B.     The URL of the site.

C.     The full names of the group members.

12. The project will be graded based upon:

A.     The proper working of the pages and links.

B.     The quality and value of the site.

C.     The overall clarity and ease of use, including accessibility guidelines.

13. The project is due no later than the last regularly scheduled class date before finals week.

14. My graduate assistant will be able to help you with technology questions. Email your questions to jwdittrich@student.ysu.edu, he is available by appointment or when you run into him in the CRC.

You can use the ADDIE instructional design model to help you build your website.

Analysis:

  1. What are the goals and objectives for this website?
  2. How will you define success for both the learner and the project?
  3. How will you measure that success?
  4. Who is the intended audience?
  5. What do the members of the learning audience already know?
  6. What do they need to learn?
  7. What resources are already available for you to use?

Design:

  1. How should content be organized?
  2. How should ideas be presented to learners?
  3. What delivery format should be used?
  4. What types of activities and exercises will best help learners?
  5. How should the website measure learners' accomplishments?

Development:

  1. Create a prototype (including graphic design).
  2. Develop the website materials.

3.   Review - Is the content accurate? Is the content complete?

Implementation:

  1. Does the website meet your goals?
  2. Does the website cover content that learners need to know?
  3. Does the website reflect the learners existing capabilities?

Evaluation:

  1. Would learners like the website? Do you?
  2. Do learners achieve the learning objectives at the end of the website? Are they given an opportunity to use the content presented?
